Book Review: Akata Witch

I was lucky enough to get a copy of Akata Witch through the Penguin First To Read program. It honestly wasn’t my first pick. I wanted Library of Fates, but all the copies were gone by the time I got there, so I took this one instead. I’m thankful that it worked out this way, because this book was unique and contained a memorable cast of characters. Sunny Nwazue is just a twelve-year-old girl struggling to live a normal life with her albino skin, until she discovers she is a Leopard Person able to do unusual magic and juju. Her more »

#ReadADessen Keeping The Moon: Review + Giveaway

“So I ran inside and up to my parents’ room and woke up my dad,” he went on, dipping the brush into the can of paint thinner and swishing it around. “I was freaking. Crying and everything. And my mom kept saying how she’d known I was too young to camp out and how he should have listened to her–this was before the divorce–and my dad kept telling her to be quiet so he could hear what I was saying, because he couldn’t understand me.” He stopped then, and I thought of the voice on the answering machine, clearing his more »

Book Review: Chime

I picked up this novel after Christina over at Christina Reads YA mentioned it as a good book for a readalong on a TTT topic.  I had the book on my TBR shelf for a while. I tried to read this one in 2012, but I ended up giving up on it (my taste wasn’t fine-tuned at this time). I am highly thankful that this book was a second chance novel. The story was wonderful and enchanting, and discussing the book with Christina as we both read it was a delightful experience. I am using lines and quotes from the more »

Epic Recs Review: Chime

Lyn recommended Chime to me, and it’d be on my list to get for quite some time. Fun fact: the author’s name (Billingsley) is actually a family name for me on my mom’s side, her sister’s, in marriage, so that was one of the many reasons I was kind of interested in it from the start. It’s weird how an author’s name alone can just get your attention, but it had. Haha. Though to be clear, I don’t know the author at all and had really never heard of her until this book. It’s no secret I love fantasy and more »

Book Review: Love on the Lifts

Around the time I was in middle school, choose your own adventure books were really popular. They were checked out of the school library all the time, and the covers were always bent and wrinkled from so many readings. I was really into reading then, and it wasn’t until I got to high school that I moved away from books for a time. But that’s a story for later (and one I am sad about). I checked out these books as often as I could. Looking them up on Wikipedia, it turns out there were 185 books in the original more »
