Book Review: Into the Drowning Deep

Into the Drowning Deep made it onto my reading list because it just seemed like the perfect gritty mermaid story – one that so many of us have waited to hit the shelves. Sure, I love the beautiful myths and sugary scenes of lovely underwater scenery of flaxen haired women. I even love the darker imagery of smirking, half naked gals who flirt with pirates and bask in their own lovely forms. But mermaid lovers know that there is also another side to the story that is just waiting to come to light. not this book Mira Grant is here more »

Book Review: Jade City

Jade City is a book about loyalty, family and warring clans. The world is Asian influenced, mostly Chinese from what I could tell–I’m not an expert or anything, but the location read like an island China, sort of like Hong Kong, maybe Taiwan because crispy squid balls are a Taiwanese dish and it’s featured as one of the entrees at the Twice Lucky Restaurant in the novel. Since everyone cool was jumping off the bridge, I threw in my lot as well. Geronimo. I don’t usually venture into adult fiction, and I was surprised that I found some parts of the book very enjoyable and amusing. There was some very pleasant portions of the book.   Love was a very strong motivator for the novel. Not romantic, drippy love, but a deeper yearning for parental, maternal more »

Book Review: The Universe Versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence

There is so much hype around this book. When I was able to pick up a copy at BEA, I was really excited. And they practically just shoved it in my hands. Redhook is a new imprint and it seems like they have a lot of good books coming out. The cool thing is they are only publishing one a month. So I am assuming this is their June release. I will definitely be following this publisher and watching to see what they do. As for The Universe Versus Alex Woods, it was good but it didn’t quite connect with more »
