Book Review: Pitch Dark

I just read a kickass book about killer aliens in outer space, two starships colliding, and ecoterrorism. It was tense, paced well, and pretty fucking scary, to be honest. And I thought that was all. But then I read the author’s note at the end. And suddenly what I thought was a straightforward horror novel in space became something a little different. It’s been a really difficult year and three months (so far) for anyone that was opposed to Trump’s presidency. But it’s probably been a terrifying nightmare come to life for anyone that isn’t white. In fact, I was quite won over by the genre-bending weirdness going on in The Wood. It’s mostly fantasy, with fae (they are immortal and called The Old Ones and The Council) and a creepy wood, but a little bit of Science Fiction (due to the time travel aspect), more »

Book Review: Goldfish

Book Review: Goldfish

This is going to be a pretty short review, because I just don’t have that much to say. Goldfish had a lot of potential, but it just didn’t live up to much of it. Basically, the author has a really great voice, but the story itself and the writing was just annoying and weak. Annoying in that there were a lot of comma splices and flow issues, and weak in that the story premise didn’t really work for me. The swimming plot came off forced to me. I loved the idea of a book about swimming, but the whole synchronized more »
