Better Late Than Never: Reviews of eARCs for the Lazy (3)

Welcome to another edition of Better Late Than Never: Reviews of eARCs for the Lazy! Do you have review copies piling up? Do you have eARCs that you requested but never got to because you got overwhelmed by life? Or did you just bite off more than you can chew? (That’s me.) At some point I was still hoping I could review these books (even though my review wouldn’t really be of use to the publisher anymore) because it would be still useful to readers, and also to me, because the pile-up was giving me anxiety every time I thought more »

Book Review: Eden West

I tend to avoid books about religion as I am afraid I will be preached to. I realize I may miss out on some wonderful reads this way, and honestly I have been preached to in books that weren’t about religion more anyway (Alice in Zombieland, I am looking at YOU),  so I took a chance with Eden West. Mainly because this author won the National Book Award for Godless, and as an atheist, I had to try one of his books. Godless is still on my TBR, by the way. This is a book about a teenager named Jacob more »

Book Review: The Kingdom of Little Wounds by Susann Cokal

A fairy tale about Syphilis, the author says. Yup, that’s pretty much exactly what it is, though it goes a bit deeper than that. I wish I could say this book blew me away. I wish I could say its contents were as beautiful as its cover. Though there are some good things here, for the most part, this book was an enormous disappointment. I was looking forward to it so much, but it just wasn’t all that I hoped it would be.  First thing I need to talk about is the book’s genre classification. This is published by Candlewick as more »

Book Review: Fallout by Todd Strasser

Fallout really let me down. It’s my first Todd Strasser novel, and as much as I hate to say it, it will probably be my last. I wouldn’t say my expectations were super high going into this, but I knew he had written A LOT of books, some of them adapted into films, so I knew he was a seasoned writer. I expected more. With a blurb like that, I expected excitement. I expected drama. I expected to be engaged to the story. But instead, I was bored and just ready for it to be over from page ten on. more »

Book Review: North of Nowhere by Liz Kessler

Oh man. It really sucks so badly when you are enjoying a book as much as I was enjoying this one, and then you get to the end and it all falls apart because you don’t like the ending or the way it was written. For that reason, I am super conflicted about the rating for this. I ended up giving North of Nowhere three stars, but it was pretty hard not to give it a two because it let me down so much. That said, I did enjoy it up until the last thirty-five or so pages, so I am more »

Book Review of Below by Meg McKinlay

You know, I didn’t know what to expect from this book. Originally published in Australia in 2011, it did draw my attention because it is extremely difficult to get Aussie fic in the US unless you pay top dollar for it or know someone who will ship it to you. It was titled Surface Tension in Australia, and I have to admit to liking that title better than the one Candlewick chose. I do like the current cover a lot better though. The colors draw me in and it does fit the story of the book well. For me, this more »
