Book Review: Gunslinger Girl

I loved this book so, so, so much. The storytelling is fabulous, and the twists that come out of nowhere, OHMIGOD. I haven’t been this surprised by a book since I don’t know when. The author is an EXCELLENT writer as well. The only thing I wish? There was a fair amount of world-building, but I wanted more. I wanted to know about how this war happened, and what led to the degradation of the government and society that led to this second civil war and how the sides panned out and who went to where. I think the current more »

Book Review: Flashtide by Jenny Moyer

Many people are tired and have moved on from the dystopian genre. BUT NOT ME! As long as authors continue to come up with original ideas, I will keep reading them. And man is this duology an original story. Okay, so there’s a bit of a Red Rising vibe, but I DNFed that and I adore this, so it can’t be that similar. I will admit, I didn’t like this installment quite as much as the last one, but I still really enjoyed it. My favorite thing about this duology is how tense it is, and how much I love more »

Forgotten Fridays: The House of the Scorpion (April FF)

In April, I (Pixie) picked The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer to be the Forgotten Friday book. Lyn and I dove into it, but as you can see our post is a couple of weeks late. We really didn’t want to just forget this discussion and thought better late than never!   Pixie: So The House of the Scorpion was actually our April FF and we are soooo behind. LOL. But that’s life. What did you think of it? Lyn: I was surprised how much I liked it  I thought it was one of Farmer’s best! Pixie: I more »

Book Review: City of Savages

I heard A LOT about City of Savages when it first came out. I don’t know why, but it was everywhere on Twitter, on Goodreads, on blogs. I bought it back then and fully intended to read it, but then psyched myself out, because I was afraid I wouldn’t like it, and I didn’t want to be disappointed. I’ve done this with so many books, by the way. I still haven’t read the sequel to The Diviners by Libba Bray. On a whim, and because I had time to read a book I owned and not an ARC, I finally more »

DNF Review: The Prelapsarians

The Prelapsarians had all the makings to be one epic post-apocalyptic story, one I may have found myself a little over-excited to try and pick up, until I started reading. Unfortunately all interest was lost within the first forty pages when I felt like it’d already become too complicated, and still had well over 600 pages to go. The writing wasn’t bad, that wasn’t the problem for me, it’s just a read that would need a lot of time to process and get through. Time I don’t really have much of nowadays. My biggest qualm with the story itself was more »

Epic Recs Review: The Fifth Wave

Well, I meant to post this review a little earlier but not only did it slip my mind some to write it up, I was still processing the entire thing after only just finishing some hours before my review had been due. Haha. I’m glad I had a little more time to sit and let it soak in because it blew me away really. Why hadn’t I read this already? I can’t believe it myself. This book is right up my alley on what I’m into during the last couple of years… the whole post-apocalyptic/hold-your-breath suspense-type thing, the books that more »
