Book Review: The Charmed Children of Rookskill Castle

How I love reading a book and just falling in love with it–its originality, its atmosphere, its treatment of history, friendships, and family. The Charmed Children of Rookskill Castle is the middle grade book you SHOULD be talking about. And I hope it gets the attention it deserves. There hasn’t been a book this magical for this age range in I don’t know how long. Not that I’ve read anyway. It’s magical. Opening this book was like cracking open a wondrous new world. A creepy, Gothic, crumbling castle turned into a children’s academy for the duration of the Blitz? Sure, I more »

Book Review: Wolf by Wolf

Book Review: Wolf by Wolf

Wolf by Wolf starts out on a cattle car heading to a concentration camp, and very quickly the reader learns that this is going to be no ordinary book. It’s sad, devastating, but also full of suspense, revenge, and excitement. It could very easily have become a book that tried to do too much, since it’s alternate history, a bit sci fi, and a road trip story. But instead it was fabulous. THIS is the book that is going to cement Ryan Graudin in the YA Hall of Fame. (I know we don’t actually have one, but…) I was hooked more »

Epic Recs: The Falconer

Pixie and I participated in Epic Recs last month, where she made a great pick for me: The Falconer by Elizabeth May. I was excited when Pixie recommended this to me for our Epic Recs in October. I have owned this book for a while, and I have been looking for an excuse to get to it. Also, fantasy/paranormal/ etc books just fit the mood in the fall. I had kept away from the description and the basic concepts before I read it, so I was very shocked that this was about fae, but more old school fairies, the kind more »

Book Review: Library of Souls

And with that, Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children has come to an end. I tried to review it earlier this week actually, but instead I ended up needing to savor it just a bit longer before gathering my thoughts together to move on. When a series ends, and I’ve adored that series enough to go through all of installments within their respective releases, it always hits me like saying goodbye to friends. Not quite gone forever because I know there will be re-reads (and movies), but it can still be emotionally hard. I know I’m not the only reader like this. more »

Book Review: Hollow City

With Library of Souls recently released, I felt I had to do a quick re-read of Hollow City. I had never got around to reviewing it properly back when I first read it, and tbh I mostly scanned the last half of it the first read through anyway due to poor timing choice back during its release. Let me start by saying how absolutely enamored I am by this story overall. From the very beginning with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, I’ve found myself completely wowed by the unique-ness of the cast of characters and the plot. One of more »

Book Review: Inferno

I can’t exactly rate Inferno or discuss it to great lengths all the way through because to be entirely honest, I haven’t finished as of this very moment while writing this… but I’ve finished a good chunk and I intend to wrap-up by the end of tomorrow at least. Since my draft had been on the calendar, and I’d already pushed it back once or twice, I figured the least I could do was go on and put up a short note. Probably better than continuing to delay. LOL. And it’s making me mentally kick myself. :p That said, I more »
