Book Review: Night Film by Marisha Pessl

It’s rare when a book is so special that you wish you could read it all over again for the first time and you are not even halfway through it yet. But that’s Night Film. It’s a book that I firmly believe will be talked about for years. It will have people saying this is their favorite book of all time. It will be criticized because someone always has to criticize a brilliant book just to be different. All the great books have naysayers. I realize I am kind of sticking this book up there on a pedestal right now, but I more »

Book Review: Genius by Steven T. Seagle, Teddy Kristiansen

Genius has a fairly low rating on Goodreads, so I didn’t really expect to enjoy it as much as I did. But I loved it! I told you I was going to start reviewing more graphic novels on the blog, and this is my second of many more (hopefully) to come. The story in this one is incredibly unique and entirely not what I expected. To be completely honest, I went into this one with almost zero expectations. I knew I loved the illustrations already after a quick peek upon receiving this in the mail. But I sort of thought more »

Book Review: The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls by Anton Disclafani

The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls (only time I will type out the title) was a pretty interesting read for me. Though I didn’t like it very much at all, I still sort of enjoyed myself and thought the author did a lot of things right. So maybe I should talk about those first. I liked the writing a lot. I did. And I think the author has a lot of talent in that area. The sentence structure, flow, and imagery was done very well. I enjoyed the atmosphere and felt she captured the setting in an exceptional way. I more »

Book Review: The Universe Versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence

There is so much hype around this book. When I was able to pick up a copy at BEA, I was really excited. And they practically just shoved it in my hands. Redhook is a new imprint and it seems like they have a lot of good books coming out. The cool thing is they are only publishing one a month. So I am assuming this is their June release. I will definitely be following this publisher and watching to see what they do. As for The Universe Versus Alex Woods, it was good but it didn’t quite connect with more »

Book Review: The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black

I think this review might be a short one. Simply put, The Resurrectionist was a work of fiction with a great premise but was majorly lacking in execution. It’s supposed to be a fake biography of this doctor who ends up doing horrible experiments on animals. The short biography is about his life growing up and descent into madness. The problem it, it’s too short. It’s dry, and it’s boring.  Biographies tend to have this encyclopedic style that state the facts without much emotion, but still, I have read some great ones that managed to hold my interest throughout. This one more »

Book Review: Learning to Fly

Quick review here, because this self-published short-story collection was only 66 pages long. I volunteered to read and review this for a friend of mine on twitter. I have to say that I really liked it! Horror, as you all know, is not my favorite genre. But I thought this 4-story collection was remarkably well-done. The first story was thought provoking and I think I would enjoy seeing this one expanded. It’s hard for me to give out any information without spoiling it for you. But I think it could be really good. I loved the swamp setting too. The more »
