Book Review: Gunslinger Girl

I loved this book so, so, so much. The storytelling is fabulous, and the twists that come out of nowhere, OHMIGOD. I haven’t been this surprised by a book since I don’t know when. The author is an EXCELLENT writer as well. The only thing I wish? There was a fair amount of world-building, but I wanted more. I wanted to know about how this war happened, and what led to the degradation of the government and society that led to this second civil war and how the sides panned out and who went to where. I think the current more »

Book Review: Alex and Eliza by Melissa de la Cruz

For some reason, I’m starting to get into the historical fiction funk here. I mean, I’ve been reading more and more of historical fiction, despite saying oh, I’m not a historical fiction kind of gal. YE SURE KEEP TELLING YO SELF THAT, MARYAM. But yes, I am starting to like reading about people in the past. Very interesting hmmmmmmmmmmm. A smol confession: I actually picked up this book from the library because it’s about Alexander Hamilton and for some reason, when you tweet that name, book twitter tends to start screaming in excitement. And I know Hamilton is a very recently famous play, which unfortunately more »

Book Review: A Map of the Dark

This is the first book in a new mystery series, and oh how much I wanted to love it. The truth is, though, that it’s really dull. I don’t know how many mass market paperback thrillers I have read over the years by average authors, and 95% of those have been better than this. Why? Well… 1. This is supposed to be a thriller. There should be some exciting element to it, but every single part of this book is predictable, with no surprises, and a truly linear plot line. You know exactly what’s going to happen when it’s going more »

Book Review: A Skinful of Shadows

Book Review: A Skinful of Shadows

There’s just something about Francis Hardinge. I’ve never read a book by her I haven’t liked. I’ve read four, and even the one I DNFed (Fly By Night) I didn’t necessarily dislike. My favorite is still A Face Like Glass, but I’ve enjoyed them all immensely. A Skinful of Shadows was a little bit darker than the other books of Hardinge’s that I have read. It’s dreary, gothic, and creepily unsettling. Our heroine, Makepeace, can take spirits into her being and allow them to live within her. Her mother tries to teach her to fight them off, but that obviously more »

Book Review: The Takedown

The Takedown – a novel that grabbed my attention based on the cover at my local bookstore. I loved that a PoC was on the front, I loved all the little pictures and how sci-fi it seemed right from the start. So I had to pick it up. The premise was just perfect as well: I loved that the synopses was very unapologetic and I loved that technology and safety with online data was the central theme of the novel. I hadn’t heard anything of this one before the release (which I’m not surprised from Disney) but I decided to more »

Book Review: Rosie Girl

I can’t even begin to express how disappointing this book was. It was hardly promoted, and I was looking forward to helping it out in that respect, but I honestly can’t recommend it and wish I could get back the time spent reading it. There were times when I felt I would be better off DNFing it, but I wanted to know how the mystery would turn out. I thought about flipping to the end to get the answer, but I was reluctant to do that. In hindsight, I should have. Rosie Girl is a book about a teen girl more »
