Book Review: Rain of the Ghosts by Greg Weisman

Book Review: Rain of the Ghosts by Greg Weisman

Before I get started, this is going to be a pretty short review. It’s a short book and I just don’t have a lot to say. It’s a simple novel, it’s very much on the surface, and it lacks the depth I was hoping it would have. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad, it just means I expected more. I can easily see someone saying to me, “But it’s a kids book; it’s a middle grade novel. What did you expect?” Well, in my opinion, that’s no excuse. Just because a book is written for kids doesn’t mean it shouldn’t more »

Book Review: The Cutting Room Floor by Dawn Klehr

Book Review: The Cutting Room Floor by Dawn Klehr

Sometimes a book goes wrong because it tries to do so many things at once, and fails to execute any of them in an excellent manner. That was the case here with The Cutting Room Floor. This book tried too hard to be lots of different things–murder mystery, girl confused about her sexuality, thriller, homage to film and theatre, small-town corruption, obsessive stalker love–and failed to bring them all together in one epic conclusion. I will admit, I enjoyed a major part of this novel. But when I got a little past the halfway point and the murder mystery completely disappeared–where more »

Book Review: Engines of the Broken World by Jason Vanhee

So I have a dilemma. Ever read a book where there were a few small things you liked, but then everything else was so awful that it overshadowed your reading experience and you couldn’t do anything BUT give a book one star? Yeah, that’s what I am dealing with when it comes to Engines of the Broken World. This book has a pretty cool creep factor and atmosphere I enjoyed, but everything else was so awful that in the end the good things don’t matter. I had a sucky reading experience, and I have to take that into consideration. One more »

Book Review: The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas

A book’s characters can make or break a reading experience for many. So can the world-building. So can the plot. But readers don’t have to worry about The Burning Sky lacking any of this content. It is all there and it is FUN. This was one of the most fun reading experiences I have had this year by far. In a year of mostly disappointments, this is definitely a book that is going to stand out as one that really made it all worthwhile. It’s not perfect–I’ll get to that in a bit–but it’s definitely one that I recommend regardless more »

Book Review: Sorcerers of the Nightwing by Geoffrey Huntington

I honestly downloaded this book because it contained the name “Nightwing” – nerd girl points for me.   I hate to attach a certain popular wizard tale to this title, even though the author mentions the book in passing, but it did feel slightly like a coat tale ride along.  That isn’t saying that the book didn’t stand out and venture out and lay down a very complex storyline to veer off the beaten path.  I’ll even admit that this was a fun read.  Let’s look at the pros and cons: What Was Good: The writing was very easy to more »

Book Review: Conjured by Sarah Beth Durst

We all need a little help from out friends – even with reviews.  Lucky for me, Jessie at Ageless Pages Reviews was awesome enough to agree to a chat review for the hot new title Conjured. We jumped right in (after some lighthearted teasing about e-mail screen names from our past – we can’t get together without some banter, you know!   Warning – Spoilers Ahead!! Jessie:  Basically, I liked it, but thought it fell short on almost anything that was promised in the blurb. Or just watered down. Lyn:  First, you said the POV was off – I agree.  I really threw more »
