This was a great Epic Recs pick by Pixie. I read and loved The Book Thief, and I have wanted to pick up more books by this author. I was fully expecting to love this one. I read 90% of it all in one sitting, and I can’t deny that the book is engaging. Sadly, there was a lot of good things about the novel, but it was all overshadowed by a huge problem, a cancer with today’s books: rape culture. Epic Recs Review: The Book Thief

Oooookay. Lili got me good this time. I have to be honest, I was a little bit skeptical about reading The Book Thief because WWII fiction isn’t really my thing. I tend to stay away from both books and movies focusing on that period in our recent history. When focused on the Holocaust, so much of it is just too horrifying and too emotionally draining. When it’s focused on the US, I find it incredibly boring and/or revisionist.
