Book Review: Heart of Iron

I didn’t expect much from Heart of Iron. This is Ashley Poston’s first non-contemporary novel, and science fiction is known for being incredibly difficult to write. I can’t imagine making that transition was easy, but I’m so glad she made the attempt, because Heart of Iron was one of my favorite books this year. The book opens as Ana and Di (her metal best friend, maybe something more) are attempting to steal the location coordinates to a mystery spaceship. Immediately a massive action battle scene breaks out, and from that moment on, I knew I was in for a treat. more »

Book Review: The Tombs

Before I start my review, I want to get the stuff about the usage of the word “gypsy” out of the way first. If you were following along with my status updates, you would have noticed that I mentioned the author note at the conclusion of the book talking about this very thing. The author mentions that she decided to use the word because that’s what society would have called them during the time the book was set, and that she decided to capitalize the word to show that she wasn’t using it as a slur. Which I get, but more »

Book Review: Pitch Dark

I just read a kickass book about killer aliens in outer space, two starships colliding, and ecoterrorism. It was tense, paced well, and pretty fucking scary, to be honest. And I thought that was all. But then I read the author’s note at the end. And suddenly what I thought was a straightforward horror novel in space became something a little different. It’s been a really difficult year and three months (so far) for anyone that was opposed to Trump’s presidency. But it’s probably been a terrifying nightmare come to life for anyone that isn’t white. If you’re a writer, more »

Book Review: Honor Among Thieves

Rachel Caine is one of my favorite authors, top five for sure. I was unsure about the premise of this book, and I can tell you right away, that part one of Honor Among Thieves is inferior to the rest. It’s not that it’s bad, because it isn’t, but it’s very mediocre compared to the rest. You have to stick with it to get to the meat and best parts of the book, which begin in part two. So resist the urge to DNF if you aren’t really into it–it gets a lot better. The book starts in a generic more »

Book Review: The Belles

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton, graciously sent to my by the publisher, and I am thankful because it was fabulous. My favorite thing about this book is how it takes familiar tropes and plot elements and bends them and tells them in a completely new and original way. I have never read world-building like this before, and I LURRRRVVVVEEEEDDDD it. It’s so girly and pretty, and the the kingdom of Orleans was so imaginative. Camellia is a Belle. At the beginning of the book they tell you the myth that gives more »

Book Review: The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza

Book Review: The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza

I honestly expected nothing from this book. It just sounded really weird and out there, so I thought I would request it. I’ve never read this author before, and now I think when I have time, I’m going to go back and read everything Shaun David Hutchinson has written. The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza was absolutely spectacular. Elena Mendoza has always heard voices, but she doesn’t know she can heal people. She finds that out one day while working at Starbucks. She’s crushing on a girl named Freddie, and she steps out onto the patio to talk to her when more »
