Book Review: The Shadow Cipher

First things first, I don’t know whether to call this book York or The Shadow Cipher. I guess the title is the latter, but the former is in a GIANT font across the cover, and I didn’t actually realize that this novel was called The Shadow Cipher until I was filling in the information for this review. And even though I like the cover, now it bothers me. At any rate, this book was pretty disappointing. It started off slow but I pushed through because I liked the characters. Then it got really good. Tension, conflict, high stakes. Then the more »

Book Review: Killman Creek

I’ve decided I will read anything Rachel Caine writes. It’s not a hard decision, really. I’m in the middle of her Great Library series that I love so much. I started and enjoyed Morganville Vampires, but then I got tired of vampires, though I will return to it at some point because it was really good. And now this: it’s the first adult series of Rachel’s that I have read, but it’s probably my favorite thing that she has written. I am not sure how long this series is; it may only be these two books because the end was more »

Book Review: This Mortal Coil

I am so glad I downloaded This Mortal Coil. I didn’t originally, but I saw several positive reviews from folks I follow on Goodreads, and so I went back and decided to get it. That was a really great decision, because this book turned out to be one of my favorites from this year. It’s actually been a really great reading year and it’s almost over, and this may be the book that rounds out the list. At its root, This Mortal Coil is about a dangerous plague far in Earth’s future. People have technology panels built into their forearms more »

Book Review: Artemis

First things first, I have NOT read The Martian. It’s on my very large list of books to read, but I haven’t had the chance to get to it yet, and now after reading Artemis, let me just say I’m not going to be in a hurry. I know, I know, so many love it, but I absolutely hated the voice in this novel, and I’ve read several reviews that state it’s very similar to the voice in The Martian (and works better there), and I just don’t want to go through that again anytime soon. There are excessive exclamation more »

Book Review: A Shadow Bright And Burning

I have to be honest. I didn’t like this book at first and considered DNFing it. The sentences were too short and the style was choppy. I like long, descriptive sentences, plenty of imagery, and a world I can get lost in. This wasn’t that at all, but something kept me reading. Perhaps it was the delightful banter between characters, the shippy-ship goodness, the lovable protagonist who kept messing up (and owned her ineptness), the surprises that shocked even me, or this magical world that I wasn’t sure about at first but then bewitched me with its brilliance. It all more »

Book Review: Flashtide by Jenny Moyer

Many people are tired and have moved on from the dystopian genre. BUT NOT ME! As long as authors continue to come up with original ideas, I will keep reading them. And man is this duology an original story. Okay, so there’s a bit of a Red Rising vibe, but I DNFed that and I adore this, so it can’t be that similar. I will admit, I didn’t like this installment quite as much as the last one, but I still really enjoyed it. My favorite thing about this duology is how tense it is, and how much I love more »
