Favorites of 2016

It seems like almost everyone is making posts about their favorite books of 2016, so I wanted to join in the fun and do my own. The thing is, I had a really interesting year of reading. There were a few great books, but mostly my reads were mediocre. I was just super picky, I guess, but when you read a lot and read for your job as well, you start to learn a few things and gain some really rigid opinions about what is good and what isn’t. So my list is the best of the best, in my opinion, and the FIRST thing I look for is great writing.

I’m going to divide my list up in two parts. The first is books that were published in 2016 that I enjoyed. The second is books that I read in 2016 and enjoyed but were not actually published in 2016. I did a lot of my own reading this year, and read fewer ARCs than I usually did, except for a few months after ALA in June when I got sucked into all the new books I added to my collection.

Let me know if you read any of these or if you intend to!

Okay, so the lists are a little longer than I thought they would be. I have put an asterisk (*) by the very best of the best. Those are books that rated 4.5-5 stars from me. But I did give a lot of books 4 stars this year, and nothing on these lists rated below 4 stars. I did a lot of DNFing in 2016 as well. If something didn’t grab me, I put it down. Don’t be afraid to do that, guys. Life’s too short to read crap.
