Hey, y’all! Welcome to the This Song Will Save Your Life blog tour! I reviewed this book when it first came out and I lived it to pieces. I was incredibly flattered and honored to be asked to be on the tour for its paperback release. I love Leila Sales’ books. I was lucky enough to get an awesome guest post with the author about a song that saved HER life. Plus, there are a couple awesome giveaways that follow. Check them out!

Also be sure to use the hashtag #SongsThatSavedMe to share the songs that saved your life!

“Pull Shapes” by the Pipettes

I have no patience for long songs. I think this is because I was raised on a rich diet of oldies, and in the ‘50s the technology simply didn’t exist for radio songs to drag on and on. Whatever the reason, I’ve gone through most of my life looking for the perfect three-minute pop song. And one of the best I’ve ever found is “Pull Shapes,” by the Pipettes, a modern British girl group that sounds like Phil Spector’s platonic ideal.

One of my best friends, Emily, and I have done many couple’s costumes for Halloweens past. One year we were Stacey and Claudia from the Babysitters Club, once we were Serena and Blair from Gossip Girl, and this past year we went as One Fish Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish. So far our one non-kids-book-related costume has been—you guessed it—the Pipettes. Here we are:

Nobody had any idea what we were. The best we got was “Au Revoir Simone?” and that was after we provided a LOT of hints. (Au Revoir Simone is another contemporary all-female band, so this wasn’t a BAD guess, just an incorrect one.) It didn’t matter, though, because WE knew that we were costumed as the performers of one of the greatest three-minute pop songs ever, and that was good enough for us.

Making friends has never been Elise Dembowski’s strong suit. All throughout her life, she’s been the butt of every joke and the outsider in every conversation. When a final attempt at popularity fails, Elise nearly gives up. Then she stumbles upon a warehouse party where she meets Vicky, a girl in a band who accepts her; Char, a cute, yet mysterious disc jockey; Pippa, a carefree spirit from England; and most importantly, a love for DJing.

Told in a refreshingly genuine and laugh-out-loud funny voice, This Song Will Save Your Life is an exuberant novel about identity, friendship, and the power of music to bring people together.
