Nest n’ News: February Wrap Up

Posted February 28, 2015 by Kara in Kara, Lyn, Nest n' News, Pixie / 8 Comments

Nest n’ News is a new feature here at Great Imaginations. Instead of doing weekly Stacking the Shelves posts, we’re going to be doing a monthly wrap-up on the last Saturday of every month. This will open up the weekends for more posts from us, and is also another way to bring the four of us together in one post – which is one of our favorite parts of co-blogging! Nest n’ News will include our book hauls, past posts, challenge updates, and more.

Kara: Last month we bought a car. This month we have been looking at real estate. I am sorry to say, it is NOT going well. We’ve been approved for a VA loan that seems to cover absolutely jack shit. It seems like every property I am interested in is rejected because it is not available under the VA loan. And I refuse to move into a house that I hate just because it’s covered. We might just have to wait until we are able to save up a more substantial down payment, and then we can go with a traditional loan. We didn’t want to wait–we really wanted to be done renting, but it is what it is. Hopefully I will have better news to share next month.

I also have a cold now. Yay for me! But I got a ton of books this month that I am excited to share down below.

Lyn: This feature is really starting to prove what a sad sack I am!

I focused on the Blind Date with a Book giveaway this month, and Valentine’s Day kept me busy, since I made gifts for my team and helped with a pot luck at work. My seven layer dip and sopaipilla cheesecake are crowd pleasers, and I love making both dishes. I also am waiting for my good luck to kick in – I found the baby in the King cake at Mardi Gras! (I hope you all know what that is…)

Thanks to some of my most evil friends on Twitter, I went on a Book Outlet kick and bought WAY too many books. I have to be honest here: I went a little book crazy this month. It is too bad the post office lost my latest package, so those books are going to post in March.

Even with all of the fun, crazy things happening, I have to mention that we finally got some SNOW/SLEET/FREEZING RAIN in Texas! I love the snow/sleet/freezing rain!!

Pixie: This has actually been a crazy month for me. I’m kind of glad it’s coming to an end and I can hopefully start over with a fresh month. LOL.  The stress has been killer. Blegh.

Good news though! I got a shiny new laptop earlier this month! I am so happy I did. My old one was on its very last leg and I could barely use it. I’m still adjusting to this new one and it may take me just a little bit, but I like it a lot so far. Windows 8.1–very chic. 🙂

Like Lyn, I also got some snow and ice days this last week, which helped me catch up some on my reading also. I think we got quite a bit more on my end of Texas. About 4.5 inches before it stopped at the end of the afternoon that day. I always complain so much about the cold, but honestly I rather enjoyed these moments:

Also one last quick update on IRL before I move on: I’m keeping my fingers super-crossed right now as I’m in the talks for a big deal to get my life-long dream car… a Mustang. Wheeee!

Bekka: Well, not much has been happening here, except that I’m STILL sick and getting worse. I’m headed to Urgent Care this afternoon though, so hopefully this will all get sorted out. Valentine’s Day obviously happened, and that was nice, since it’s the anniversary of my first date with Mike. 6 years! We’ve had snow for the last century here; the local kids haven’t been in school for like two weeks.

I am challenging myself to read more middle grade this year. Last month I read 2 middle grade books. This month I also read two middle grade books which brings my total to FOUR middle grade books so far this year.

I’m not actually participating in this as I am reading what I want and seeing what squares I can cover, but I’ll put my results here anyway.

Last month I covered 6 squares. This month I covered:

Fairytale Retelling – Of Beast and Beauty
Mental Illness – When Reason Breaks
Start a Series – The Water and the Wild
Pretty Dress Cover – The Winner’s Crime
Mystery or Thriller – Paper Valentine

5 squares! Pretty good for not even trying. I do not yet have a bingo, however. Wah wahhhh.

I’m not really keeping up with it as much as I’d hoped. Haha. I do know I have almost all the lines filled except for one on nearly each line. Lol. So no Bingos. 😛

Flights of Fantasy (Goal, 15 books by end of year):

Total still at 3. Didn’t read any Fantasy toward this challenge in February. Boooo me. 🙁

Last month, I covered 5 squares. This month, I covered six more and I got my first bingo finally!

  1. I really hope the home search starts to look up for you, it really sucks that the VA loan is pretty much worthless, if anyone deserves the extra help it’s our veterans!! I agree on the not settling just because it fits the loan, we are stuck in a house right now that seemed like a good idea 5 years ago but is now a horrible fit, and selling then buying is a LOT harder than renting then buying because there is no way we could survive with two house payments!
