Pick your path to find the perfect guy in this personalized romance set on the ski slopes! A book version of The Bachelorette!
What better way to spend your vacation than on the slopes? In this unique romance, the reader’s in the driver’s seat—creating her own path through the narrative and ending with one of eleven different guys. By making selections at the end of each chapter, the reader decides who will be her perfect match. It could be the athletic ski instructor, one of the adorable twin brothers in the lodge, or the sweet guy with the broken leg by the fireplace. Finding your dream guy couldn’t be easier, and it all takes place against the snowy backdrop of a romantic ski resort. And if not all readers are looking for love, there are other options: to hang with your sister, make new friends, or spend some time alone. But any way you slice it, every reader will have their love on the lifts!
Around the time I was in middle school, choose your own adventure books were really popular. They were checked out of the school library all the time, and the covers were always bent and wrinkled from so many readings. I was really into reading then, and it wasn’t until I got to high school that I moved away from books for a time. But that’s a story for later (and one I am sad about).
I checked out these books as often as I could. Looking them up on Wikipedia, it turns out there were 185 books in the original series! I don’t remember how many I read, but it wasn’t nearly that many.
At any rate, I was a big fan of these books, so when Penguin asked me if I wanted to review Love On the Lifts, I thought it might be fun and a bit nostalgic. And it was!
Love on the Lifts is a choose your own adventure romance, where the reader can decide what direction her story will take, and what boy she will end up with (or choose no boy at all). It’s very short, especially if you go with your original choice and leave it at that. I did not because I did not LIKE my original choice. I thought he was a bit creepy, to be honest, so I kept trying. That’s not the ONLY reason I chose to read through a few more options, though. I wanted to be able to review the book honestly and from an informed perspective.
The writing is fine, though it’s a bit flat. It could be the second person narrative, but it needs to be that way because YOU are the protagonist, so yeah. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, but if you choose this book for that anyway, you are probably in it for the wrong reasons. It’s fun, you get to go on a ski trip, and you get to meet a bunch of different guys and try out your luck with love.
Speaking of which, what exactly IS the plot? Well, you go on a ski trip with your family, namely your sister. You’ve just broke up with your boyfriend and your sister says the best way to get over a guy is to lock lips with a new one. But what if you don’t want to? What if you’d rather be alone for a while? Well, you can do that too.
The guy I ended up with was the future heir of the actual ski resort we were staying at. I wish I had ended up with the rich guy in real life. Hahaha. Anyway, this was fun, and I recommend it.
