top ten tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
This week’s theme: 2014 Debuts We Are Excited For.

It’s a new year, and that means new debut authors to look forward to throughout the year. There are a few things that make me look forward to a new bookish year, and this is one of them. I love looking forward to new books by new authors. I also look forward to starting fresh with my reading because it renews my passion for what we do here.
For anyone that doesn’t know, a debut author is someone who is debuting their first book in a genre in 2014. It doesn’t have to be their first book of all time, it just has to be their first book in that genre. So, for instance, an author could write adult romance and be debuting a YA novel in 2014. But, it can also be an author’s first book ever.
These are our picks:
Kara’s Picks:
Blackfin Sky by Kat Ellis (Firefly Press Ltd.)
The Secret Side of Empty by Maria E. Andreu (Running Press Kids)
Strange Sweet Song by Adi Rule (St. Martin’s Press)
Open Road Summer by Emery Lord (Walker Children’s)
Hexed by Michelle Krys (Delecorte Press)
Lyn’s Picks:

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge: Fairy Tale retelling!? Yes, please!
Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman: I worry over Nazi fiction, but I am willing to make an exception for this one.
Crown of Ice by Vicki L. Weavil: I have a love for HCA stories (I can even forgive the religious slant). Note: Non-cover picture above
What the Moon Said by Gayle Rosengren: Sounds way too cute!
Camelot Burning by Kathryn Rose: Steampunk and King Arthur!? I might just have a heart attack!

  1. The Secret Side of Empty looks really good. I hadn’t heard of that one before! Open Road Summer is super popular this week… I must look more into that one 🙂 Cool List!

    My TTT

  2. I am reading Cruel Beauty right now and it’s GRRRR-RREAT! What the Moon Said seems uber cute and I’m totally adding it to my TBR. The cover and title are so full of wonder. The Secret Side of Empty’s cover is fantastic, too- I’m adding it except I’m not much too impressed by the plot. Even if she is an undocumented immigrant. Thank you guys!

  3. Love your picks! I also am excited to read CRUEL BEAUTY and HEXED. Oh, and BLACKFIN SKY too! I’m intrigued by CROWN OF ICE, which I’ve never heard of, but having just watched FROZEN I love the story of the Snow Queen, so I’ll have to check it out!

    Here’s my Top Ten.

  4. Great list! I’m so excited for so many of these and they made my list too. I am especially excited for Open Road Summer, it looks so good! There seems to be so many good books coming out in 2014, I’m not sure where I’ll find the time to read them all. I hope you get to all of your picks 🙂 My TTT.

  5. Cruel beauty is stunning. I can’t wait for Prisoner of night and fog! I’m always in for a good war book. I included Camelot burning on my list. I like the look of Hexed 🙂 and a war between witches and wizards? Yes please!

  6. Jim

So how many of them have you read by now? I loved Open Road Summer, and I have Hexed and Prisoner of Night and Fog. (Like Lyn, I worry over Nazi fiction, but this sounds excellent!)

    Great list. 🙂
