stacking the shelves
Welcome to Stacking the Shelves. Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga at Tynga’s Reviews. This is where we showcase books we have received or bought during the week.

Kara here! This week I have an awesome haul to show you. A couple review books, and I have a lot of books I bought and picked up on vacation in Philadelphia. I took a day trip to New York City and stopped by The Strand, and whoa was I ever wowed by their prices! I have to say though that I was underwhelmed by the layout of the bookstore. It is not built for browsing at all. The aisleways are extremely narrow and they stack the books too high so you can’t see what is on the top shelves. But I will probably go back next year because some of those deals can’t be beat. I had a lot of fun on my trip but I am really glad to be back home. That said, I am ready for the next bookish event already!

E-books:

I only got two and I didn’t get them this week. I forgot to include one in a pst haul and the other I got while I was at Book Bash.

Shooting Scars by Karina Halle
Steel Lily by Megan Curd

In the interest of full disclosure, I have been incredibly fortunate enough to work with both these authors, but I did not edit THESE manuscripts so I feel it is perfectly fine for me to review them honestly.

On the blog this past week:

On Monday, we posted a cover reveal of Pendomus by Carissa Andrews.

Tuesday came and Lyn posted her Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations.

Wednesday, we both picked two upcoming books we are excited about.

On Thursday, Kara posted a review for The Universe Versus Alex Woods and was sort of disappointed and a bit underwhelmed.

And on Friday, Lyn posted her review of These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner and it didn’t live up to all the hype, though she still liked it.

Links We Love:

Tammy at Books, Bones, and Buffy has an awesome giveaway for a copy of In the Shadow of Blackbirds, which Kara loved!

Shelley at Gizmo’s Reviews includes Kara on her list of Blogger BFF’s during the 15 Day Book Blogger Challenge.

Jamie at The Perpetual Page Turner talks about being married to a non-reader. I can relate to some of this. Dan is not a non-reader but he reads a lot LESS than I do.

Christina at A Reader of Fictions posts her top ten reasons she picks up YA books.

  1. Psssh. Are you kidding? Your haul’s epic. The School of Good and Evil looks interesting. Oh and boo for Alex Woods. Looking forward to reading that. Hopefully, i’ll have a different reaction.

I hope you’re having a great summer so far, Kara!

    xoxo

Such an awesome haul!! I loved The School for Good and Evil!! I hope you enjoy it!! Meant To Be was a good book too. I’m glad that you had a good trip!! Hope you enjoy all the awesome books you got!

  3. I’ve heard some great things about The House of the Scorpion! I’m planning on treating myself to a copy of that soon actually. I hope you enjoy it. I’m also really curious about Horde and Where’d You Go, Bernadette. Lovely haul, Kara! Hope you have a great week. 🙂

  4. HOLY FRENCH TOAST YOU GOTS SHOOTING SCARS *dies* I haven’t even read Sins & Needles yet, which in my opinion is shame on my part but I’m waiting for the sequel so I can dive into both books because I heard the ending to book one was craaaaazy! For the other books you got, I only read Meant To Be, which was cute. I haven’t read Golden, but I heard that one was really great. Hope you love these books! Happy happy reading!! (:

  5. Some lovely titles there! I have School for Good and Evil for review and can’t wait to read it- I believe it’s MG and I saw so many pretty pics of the Golden hardcover on twitter! I really want a copy but I’m a paperback girl. >.<

    Happy reading, Kara! <33

  6. Eeeeeeee! Shooting Scars! So freaking excited for that one. I still need to read The House of the Scorpion… want to do that quick since the sequel comes out soon! And Golden… sigh. What an awesome book. happy reading!!

  7. Sweet damn this is a hot haul! The House of the Scorpion is a book that’s been on my TBR for ever, can’t wait to see what you’ll think of it! School for Good and Evil is one I’ve been itching to get into since getting back from BEA and it should be my very next read 😀 Heard nothing but good things about that Karina Halle series and both that one and that Anne Aguirre series are on the reading list! Golden and Meant to Be have been getting good buzz too from what I’ve seen! I’d say enjoy your books but in this case, I think it goes without saying XD Congrats though!

    • Christina regrets nothingggggggg!

Also, Christina is curious to see what you think of the Megan Curd and Halle books, because she wants to know if she should read them.

      Christina OUT!

    • I liked Shooting Scars a little better than Sins and Needles as I believe it is paced and plotted a little better. Still have to read the Megan Curd but I am reading it before the 12th so I will let you know!
