Waiting on Wednesday #29

Posted June 26, 2013 by Kara in Kara, Lyn, Waiting on Wednesday / 12 Comments

Welcome to this week’s Waiting on Wednesday. Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine where we showcase upcoming releases we are looking forward to.

It’s time for another Waiting on Wednesday. So. Lyn and I have decided to divide up blog posting in a different way. I’ll be assisting her with Top Ten Tuesday starting yesterday, and she’ll be contributing a pick to Waiting on Wednesday starting today! I’m excited to see what she comes up with!

For my pick this week, I’ve chosen something almost purely based on the cover. I mean the blurb sounds awesome, but the cover is gorgeous. I think a lot of people have probably already heard about this, but I haven’t seen much information anywhere, so I thought I would feature it. Ready?

Kara’s Pick:

Title: Sea of Shadows

Author: Kelley Armstrong
Publisher: Harper Teen
Release Date: April 8th, 2014

Summary from Goodreads: They hear the spirits. They must obey.

In the Forest of the Dead, where the empire’s worst criminals are exiled, twin sisters Moria and Ashyn are charged with a dangerous task. For they are the Keeper and the Seeker, and each year they must quiet the enraged souls of the damned.

Only this year, the souls will not be quieted.

Ambushed and separated by an ancient evil, the sisters’ journey to find each other sends them far from the only home they’ve ever known. Accompanied by a stubborn imperial guard and a dashing condemned thief, the girls cross a once-empty wasteland, now filled with reawakened monsters of legend, as they travel to warn the emperor. But a terrible secret awaits them at court–one that will alter the balance of their world forever.

For my pick, I went with something that had a great title (I mean, MASKS, always a weak spot for me!).  This is a high fantasy book, which is an area that I usually skip.  However, with a description such as the one below, this book appeals to my curiosity, and brings in a certain element of Girl Power.

Lyn’s Pick:

Title: Princess in the Opal Mask
Author: Jenny Lundquist
Publisher: Running Press Kids
Release Date: October 22nd, 2013

Description from Goodreads: One Legend Determines the Fate of Two Lives

In the faraway village of Tulan, sixteen-year-old Elara has spent her entire life as a servant, trying to track down her real name. The name she was given before being orphaned. Meanwhile, in the kingdom of Galandria, Princess Wilhamina does not know why her father, the king, makes her wear a mask. Or why she is forbidden to ever show her face.

When a new peace treaty between Galandria and Kyrenica is threatened, Elara and Wilha are brought face to face. Told in alternating perspectives, this intricate fairytale pulls both girls toward secrets that have been locked away behind castle doors, while the fate of two opposing kingdoms rests squarely on their untrained shoulders.

  1. Oooh you guys always have great WOW picks! I have seen Sea of Shadows, and I love that cover, especially the way they’ve done the “o” in “of.” The Princess in the Opal Mask is new to me, and looks so good. Great choices!!

    Here’s my WOW.

  2. Had never seen Sea of Shadows before! *Adds to TBR* Sounds very interesting and I love the sister bond I’m seeing via synopsis. I’ve yet to read a Kelley Armstrong book, though her short stories are generally exciting. As for The Princess in the Opal Mask, I too am a huge sucker for masks (and secrets and court intrigue), and Girl Power stories are always the best. I’m a little sad, though, that you tend to avoid high fantasy 🙁 (then, again, you loved Siege and Storm so ha :D).

    • Me either and I am excited to read this one. Her other series is not really my thing though I might try it at some point. Lyn always says she avoids high fantasy, but that’s not been my experience. She reads A LOT of it! 😀
