Stacking the Shelves #36

Posted March 30, 2013 by Kara in Kara, Stacking the Shelves / 32 Comments

Welcome to Stacking the Shelves! Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Team Tynga’s Reviews. This is where we showcase books we have received or bought during the week.

Before I get started on the books I’ve acquired this week, I just wanted to let y’all know that Lyn will be back to posting more as soon as she can. She’s still trying to stay with me, but her life has been extremely busy lately and some important job stuff has come up. When she has a little more time, she’ll be posting more, I am sure.

This week I got two review books in the mail and I received a shipment I ordered from Amazon that you may have seen me squeeing about last week. It’s the best Amazon order I’ve ever placed and I know I know what I ordered, but I was still really excited anyway to hold them in my hands.

Someone on Twitter mentioned BEA is in 9 weeks. 9 weeks until I am on a plane by myself, freaking out. 9 weeks until I am in the middle of a claustrophobic crowd and panicking. But at least I get to see my friends. That’s the upside.

I’ve also just learned that Amazon has acquired Goodreads, and though I’m not thrilled about it, I’m also not going to split a vein either. Amazon bought Shelfari in 2008 and nothing changed. So maybe not that much will be altered. I hope. So I’m not leaving Goodreads, in case you were wondering. At least not yet. I want to see what changes they make first. Though I will say I am a bit worried they will enact even more review censorship on the site.

But enough on that for now. Life must continue. On to the books.

From left to right:

For Review-

The Circle (The Engelsfors Trilogy #1) by Sara B. Elfgren, Mats Strandberg (Thank you to Overlook Press)

Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu (Thank you to Walden Pond Media)

Pantomime by Laura Lam

Fly by Night by Frances Hardinge

The Menagerie by Tui T. Sutherland and Kari Sutherland

Pretty Girl-13 by Liz Coley

Orleans by Sherri L. Smith

Pretty great haul, huh? I’m excited about reading them if I ever get to them. I should be reading Fly by Night fairly soon as Lyn and I are doing a read-a-long for that when we have time. But the rest? Who knows? Leave me a comment and I will try to stop by your posts! I expect next week to be a fairly slow one as I don’t know if I have anything coming, but we will see. Happy reading!

  1. I’ve been hearing AMAZING things about Orleans and Breadcrumbs is supposed to be wonderful as well, so I’m excited to see what you think of these, Kara! Wonderful haul! 😀

  2. I really want to read Breadcrumbs. I picked it up when it was a Kindle Daily Deal, but have heard that it’s better to read in print, so I may just check it out from the library.

    Happy reading!

    My StS post 🙂

Though I’m not exactly happy with the news, I’m not splitting a vein over GR yet either. I’ll wait to see if there are any changes that affect me first. Anyway, great set of book there! I had some mixed thoughts on Pantomime, though I liked it overall. Breadcrumbs is one I’m really curious about. I’ve heard great things about that book!

  4. Ooh, can’t wait to see what you think of Orleans. I’m waiting on my copy right now. I’ve heard that there isn’t a romance element, so that really surprises/excited me. And I hope Pantomime is good! It look reaaaally interesting, and I haven’t heard anything about it really.

Have fun at BEA! I wish I could be there, but maybe next year 🙂

  5. I bought A Tale for The Time Being as well! The trailer for it was really great and I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. Fingers crossed with both enjoy it! Great haul!

  6. Man I really wish I hadn’t been late to that Breadcrumbs grab, that one has been on my TBR for so long! I hope you love it. Pretty Girl-13 was really good! I can’t wait to see what you think of it, it’s so twisty and good. I really want to read Orleans too, but I am not too sure if I will love it or not so I will wait for your review on that one.

  7. I really enjoyed Orleans, I thought it was an incredibly well-done dystopian and wasn’t completely over-whelmed by some non-essential romance. There’s actually no romance at all in it. I really need to get around to reading Breadcrumbs. I received a signed hardcover copy I don’t know how long ago and it’s still sitting on my shelf. *tsk tsk* I know. lol
    Happy Reading!
    My Showcase Sunday!

  8. Pretty Girl-13 and Orleans! I was realllly impressed with both of those, and I hope you are, too. Also, I haven’t decided if I want to pick Pantomime up, so I’m interested to see how you felt the author handles the hermaphrodite/trans topic.

  9. Amy

Great haul babe!! I really liked Pretty Girl-13. Pantomime sounds awesome too! Oh all the BEA excitement. I wish I was going. I’m trying to find someone who loves me enough to get Frigid by Jennifer L. Armentrout for me lol! I can’t wait to see everyone’s tweets and recaps and such from it!! I expect all sorts of fun tweets from you and Giselle. 😉 I just heard about Amazon buying GR and I don’t really know what to think about that. Hopefully they don’t change things.

  10. Breadcrumbs! I have that one and need to read it .. it looks really good!

I’m hoping that nothing changes with Goodreads … I really like it how it is! I think the only thing I would change is to make a better search engine. The current one kind of sucks.

    Have a good week!

  11. That’s exactly how I feel about the whole Amazon/GR thing, though I did grab the free LT account, because why the eff not, right?

I approve of all of the books you bought. (I know you were desperate for my approval.)

Oh, also, I need to ship your box. I’m the worst. I did add a couple more books. I just need to find something to stuff in there so it’s full and they won’t get damaged.

  12. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to meet you at BEA, Kara! It IS claustrophobic and overwhelming, but it’s really fun too. Also, this IS a great haul! I’ve been waiting for some people I follow to read The Menagerie, I want to hear about it! Also YAY Hardinge and Ursu, and I really want to check out Orleans myself.

  13. Pantomime & The Menagerie are two I’m really wanting to read! And I’ve heard great things about Pretty Girl-13 so I hope you’ll love it too!

Wow, only 9 weeks left till BEA!! I gotta tell you I’m having a little anxiety about the crowds & insanity too o.O especially since I’ve never ever been to a big city anywhere near NY…eeeep but it’s exciting too so 😀

    Enjoy your goodies girl!
