Stacking the Shelves #12

Posted October 13, 2012 by Kara in Stacking the Shelves / 44 Comments

Welcome to Stacking the Shelves. Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga at Tynga’s Reviews. This is where we showcase books we have received or bought during the week.

I only received two physical review books since I last did a book haul, and that’s even more review books than I normally get. But I also have a few E-books I got for review. I only bought one book because it was free, but I just put in an Amazon order the day for yesterday and I figured I would save that for next week’s post. So this week is ALL review books.

From MacKids this week, I got (in two colorful packages on different days):

Why: I get the Macmillan catalog sent to me, and though I didn’t really want much from the winter catalog, this one really caught my eye. I liked the blurb and I liked the cover. Plus, I love a good mystery. Most YA mysteries let me down, but I’m hoping this one changes that.

Why: I really loved Cinder and I can’t wait to get my hands on this since Little Red Riding Hood is one of my favorite fairy tales. I love Marissa Meyer’s writing, and since I am already familiar with her writing, I am pretty sure I will like this one.

When I request physical ARCs (which I rarely do), I try to make sure it will be something I will enjoy. That is not always the case, but I am certainly more careful with physical ARCs than I am with e-books. Speaking of e-books, I got the following books for review this week:

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool

Why: This sounds totally different than anything I usually read. But I loved the blurb, and the cover is really beautiful. Plus, this author won a Newbery for Moon Over Manifest. I haven’t been able to read that yet (though I want to), but here was the chance to pick up something she had written so I went for it!

Flash Point by Nancy Kress

Why: The blurb on this one really made me want to read it. A reality show in a post-apocalyptic world? What could be more entertaining than that? Turns out, a lot of things! I am reading this one right now and it is NOT going well. But I will stick it out and hope (I doubt it) it gets better.

I also bought one book from Amazon this week because they were having a free promotion, which actually worked out well because this was one I had on my TBR for awhile. That is

Photobucket

Why: Well, it was on my TBR shelf and it was free. It has decent ratings and the blurb sounded interesting. I’m a little bit worried because it doesn’t sound all that original, but I am willing to give it a shot.

And that’s it for me this week! What did you get? Leave me a comment and I will come visit your STS posts. Until next week, happy reading!!

  1. Great haul, Kara! I hadn’t realized they were doing a free promotion for Darkness Falls this week. I’m a sucker for free books, so I just went and picked it up myself. I’m sorry you weren’t able to enjoy Flash Point. It sounded interesting to me, but something seemed off about it. My bookish senses saved me!

I saw it when MacKids tweeted the bright pink envelopes they were sending Unremembered in and I wanted one solely because of the packaging. What can I say? I love pink.

I still wish I knew if I could email Ksenia about a copy of Scarlet and another book I’m interested in. I haven’t gotten a reply from her and I don’t know if that means I can email her or not. -bites nails- I’ve been worrying about it so much that I expect someone to tell me to shut up about it soon.

    • Ashleigh-I have had to email Ksenia a few times, and usually what I have found is that you have to email her more than once to get her to respond. I am under the impression that she is extremely busy and she has never been annoyed when I bugged her. Don’t be afraid to send a follow up email if you have not already done that.

Glad you were able to get Darkness Falls as well. Flash Point was something. Be glad your bookish senses saved you.

  2. Same thing for me this week for Darkness Rising! It was on my reading list for awhile and free is just too perfect to pass up πŸ˜€ And I’m excited to see Scarlet there, I’m dying to get into my copy of Cinder! Great haul this week, thanks for sharing & happy reading πŸ™‚

  3. YOU HAVE AN ARC OF SCARLET!?!? That sound you hear? That’s my envy exploding. I loved Cinder and the spin Meyer put on it so you know I am going to be stalking your updates til you get to this one? I seriously hope it lives up to the first for you!

I am curious about the Unremembered, but I’ll wait for more reviews before I decide if I want to sell my soul for a copy yet πŸ˜‰

    • I do. Trust me when I say I know how lucky I am. πŸ™‚ Hopefully I can get to it soon because I love Little Red Riding Hood.

I hear Unremembered is good. Looking forward to reading it.

    • You are welcome. I really wouldn’t bother. It’s not one I would recommend. Glad you thought Darkness Falls was an interesting book. Does that mean good or bad? I’m intrigued. Thanks for your comment!

  4. Great haul.

Navigating Early is only released in the UK in January, so I’ve added it to my Wish List.

The cover for Unremembered looks interesting. Hope it gets a Kindle release in the UK.

Enjoy your reads and please feel free to check out my haul for the last week.

  5. Scarlet, Unremembered and Flash Point are all books that I really want to read. I can’t wait to get to them, but I hate that they don’t come out for forever so I feel like I shouldn’t read them because I can’t review them on the blog immediately. Hope you enjoy all the pretties!

    • I know. I have to wait too. I hate that. But Flash Point comes out at the end of this month. I wouldn’t read it though. I know you have to, but I hated it. Thanks, Jenni!

  6. Amy

Ahh I am so dying to read Scarlet. It seems like everyone but me got it this week. πŸ™ Unremebered and Flash Point both sound really good too!! Great haul chick!!

  7. I got both of those Macmillan books too. I requested a couple middle grades as well, but I don’t know when they’ll arrive. Oooh, someone already read Scarlet. I’m waiting, since I can’t review it til forever anyway.

    • I know. I guess I should feel lucky that I got a copy. Cinder was really good. It wasn’t a 5 star book for me but I did give it a 4.

I can’t wait to read Unremembered.

  8. Ooh, yes! Unremembered! I’ve been intrigued by that one since I saw the cover — it’s very pretty, and so mysterious!

I still have to read Cinder! I started it DAYS ago but haven’t picked it up since. I really must rectify that!

Thanks for sharing! Enjoy the reads!
