Worse yet, the steriods are having an unexpected effect, turning hot gridiron hunks into mindless flesh-eating zombies. No one is safe–not her cute crush Aaron, not her dorky brother, Jonah . . . not even Kate! She’s got to find an antidote–before her entire high school ends up eating each other. So Kate, her best girlfriend, Rocky, and Aaron stage a frantic battle to save their town . . . and stay hormonally human.

Review: Bad Taste in Boys has so many rave reviews. So MANY of my friends loved it! Going into reading it, I truly thought I would be another fangirling review on the pile. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Somewhere we went wrong, and I think it was the extreme cheese-factor for which I was not able to suspend disbelief. There is a certain level of gross-out humor I can take and there is a certain level of ridiculous comedy that works for me and this book just went above and beyond what I was able to tolerate.

And it’s not only that. The story was just ho-hum for me. It wasn’t original and there wasn’t anything that made it stand out. You have a girl that is the assistant trainer for the varsity high school football team. They are the worst team of all-time and haven’t won a game in a really long time. So the coach injects them with a performance enhancing drug to make them play better. Only it has a zombie virus in it. Before you know it, the entire school is in danger of becoming zombies because we have zombie football players running around. There is a lot of vomiting, lost appendages, and it just gets really…corny. And it’s up to Kate to stop it all.

The thing that really sent this over the edge into books-I-don’t-like territory was the way the zombie virus was cured. (This is not a spoiler. It was completely obvious by the halfway point that it was going to be cured.) It was completely unscientific and utterly ridiculous. And you know, that’s okay if it’s believable. But to me it wasn’t. At all. And as a lover of science, it just was laughable to me. “But Kara! It’s just fiction! Live a little!” Yeah, no. Sometimes I can do that but rarely. It’s just not the way I read. Things have to be explained in a logical way for me. Usually. There was not a damn thing about this book that was logical.

So why two stars instead of one? Well, the romance was sweet albeit cheesy. The characters were decently written even though they were a little dull. It was compulsively readable and I got through it in a few hours The writing was pretty skilled. I liked the author’s style and I think I would read something else she wrote, just not book two of this series. It’s going to be about werewolves, and if this book is any indication, it will be loaded with lots of spittle, flying fur, and the mange.

  1. Another bust, eh? Oh well. Can’t win them all. I too, can sometimes forgive the convenience of a certain conflict but not when it has to do with Science or Crime. I’ve had this one for a while and it’s the cover that’s giving me the heebie jeebies.

    Great review, Kara!

    • Almost everything has been a bust lately. I’m reading a good self-published book now that I am enjoying much more. I can’t wait to review that one.

And I agree with you. I can be forgiving about certain topics, but not science. Though I know less about crime, that too because it is science as well.

Almost everyone dislikes the cover. LOL.

I definitely need explanations to be logical too, especially as I work in science. I tend to be quite particular about these things, regardless of whether or not I am reading a piece of fiction. 🙂 Great review, Kara!

  3. Amy

I have been wanting to read this book too since so many of my blogger friends seem to love it, but it does sound a little over the top. I am sure I will still read it at some point because I am curious, but I won’t go into it with any expectations. Great review!

  4. I hate when that happens! Though, I have a few people who read books and love them, where I hate them, and vice versa. I really have to get my book recommendations with a grain of salt.

The cover for this one is gorgeous, though. And it *sounds* good! Too bad you didn’t like it.

    • And there is someone who likes the cover! This cover is soo polarizing. Interesting!

I wish I had liked this one. I hate when I dislike something most of my friends like. It happened with Legend too. I actually liked that one, just not nearly as much as everyone else. Sigh.

    • Oh, also, I hate when I dislike things my friends like too, and it happens ALL THE TIME. There’s a reason my closest reading matches on GR are 80%, because the other 20% of the time, I love things everyone else in the world hates and hate the things they love.

      Examples: Crewel, Divergent.

  5. Oh no, this might not work for me either. I can take only a very minimal amount of gross out humor. Darn.

“But Kara! It’s just fiction! Live a little!” *snorts* I would never say this to you. I have trouble with suspension of disbelief a lot. I accept a lot of things, but, if something’s missing, it’s really obvious because I keep snarking at my book.

Also, I don’t like this cover either. It’s visually arresting, but the title font is awful and WHY DID SHE DIP HER LIPS IN THAT SUGAR THAT GOES ON THE RIM OF BOOZEY DRINKS?

  6. I’m sorry to hear this wasn’t a great read for you. I thought the cover was interesting, so I figured if I ever saw it at the library I would give it a go, but I don’t have a desire to do so anymore. Doesn’t seem like my type of book.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

    • I do think the cover is visually arresting. So many don’t like it. 🙂 I’m glad that I helped you come to a decision, even if it was a negative one. That’s what I am here for! 😉
