Stacking the Shelves #11

Posted September 29, 2012 by Kara in Stacking the Shelves / 36 Comments

Welcome to Stacking the Shelves. Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga at Tynga’s Reviews. This is where we showcase books we have received or bought during the week.

Once again, it’s been a few weeks since I have done a book haul post. I haven’t gotten ANY books for review because I haven’t accept any requests, and also I haven’t sent but a few in that I have yet to get a response to yet. But that’s okay, because I am really trying to lay off the review books because I want to start reading my own books and utilizing my library.

But I have bought quite a few books for my Kindle. So that’s what I’m going to be showing today. No pictures because they are e-books but I will be posting the covers and links to add them on Goodreads. Though I think you will have heard of most of them.

So, here we go!

Bought for my Kindle:

The Unidentified by Rae Mariz

The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna

The Waiting Sky by Lara Zielin

A Face Like Glass by Francis Hardinge

Fingerprints of You by Kristen-Paige Madonia

Defiance by C.J. Redwine

Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs

Carpe Diem by Autumn Cornwell

I didn’t buy all of these this week. They are a compilation of purchases I made over the last three weeks. I think it’s been three weeks since I did a haul post. So that’s not too bad. I didn’t go book crazy or anything. I try to keep it down to a couple purchases a week. But Sweet Venom was FREE this week.

Have you heard of any of these? Have you read any of them? If so, what did you think? Leave me a comment and I will come visit your STS posts!

  1. Amy

I really liked The Lost Girl, I hope you enjoy it. I want to get Defiance, The Waiting Sky and Fingerprints of You. Those sound really good. I got Sweet Venom too. I mean, it was Free so why not. Great haul. I really want to make more time to read books I have purchased or from the library too. I have a lot scheduled through November, but I haven’t been accepting much more for this year.

    • Me too, Amy! I love free books. Who doesn’t? I have really cut down on my review books. I am almost through my physical ARCs and I just finished up my NetGalley queue yesterday, so I am in good shape. Prepare to see older books on this blog shortly! That’s a good thing!

  2. I absolutely agree with you about cutting back on review copies. I have so many books right now it’s not even funny. I’ve been to too many library book sales and have literally hundreds of books on my shelves! Enjoy your reading and have a great weekend!

    • Yes! And I cannot wait to get to some of them. My tbr shelf is crammed with books I own. So is my Kindle. I’m excited to get started. Maybe it will make reading fun again!

  3. I really really want A Face Like Glass! I hope you read that one soon. I’ll be watching. Not creepily like, just normal.

I just got The Lost Girl and Sweet Venom too! I’ve had the Unidentified since December on my Nook – it was $.99 – but couldn’t get into the first 30 pages. I hope it grabs you better.

A lovely haul Kara. And a lot of those covers are gorgeous. Happy reading, lady 🙂

    • LOL Jessie! I will try to read it soon, just for you. I am almost done with review books so I think I can fit it in before the end of the year. I’ve been wanting to read it for a long time.

About The Unidentified- I hope it does me too! The blurb sounded awesome but I did see mixed reviews.

      Thanks, Jessie! <3

  4. Kara, The Lost Girl is one of the BEST books you’ll read this year. It’s amazing, so I really hope you love it. The Waiting Sky is also one of those gut-wrenching stories and I’m SO excited to see what you think of A Face Like Glass since I want to read it so badly myself. I wasn’t a huge fan of Defiance, so I wish you better luck with it than I had! Wonderful haul this week, Kara – I can’t wait to read all your reviews for these! 😀

    • Oh, I hope so, Keertana! The reviews for it are outstanding! I’m excited to read them all, really.

I will try to get to A Face Like Glass soon. I didn’t know so many people wanted to read that one!

You are right about Defiance and I am probably not going to like it, but I’m going to attempt it anyway.

And thanks! I’ll try to read fast! 🙂

  5. Love the cover for The Unidentified, I’ve never heard of that one before, but I will definitely be checking it out on GR now. I really enjoyed The Waiting Sky, it was a quick read that ended up being pretty deep. I hope you like it just as much. Great haul chick!

  6. Very nice haul! Sweet Venom has been popular this week with it being free and I jumped on it too! Defiance sounds AMAZING! Congrats on all the new books and happy reading! If you would like to check out my Stacking The Shelves post you can do so here. 🙂

  7. Wow, such a great haul, Kara! I really want to read The Lost Girl- I’ve heard marvelous things about it. 🙂 I’m on the fence about Defiance, but I’m interested in your thoughts… I hope you enjoy all your goodies and I look forward to your opinions of them!

    • Yes, the reviews for The Lost Girl are pretty impressive. I’m anxious to read it and I hope I can get to it soon!

I’m on the fence about Defiance too. Some of my friends didn’t like it much but it was one of those books that I just had to try for myself.

  8. I liked The Unidentified, probably would rate it a 3.5, had I been rating at the time.

I’ve heard wonderful things about Francis Hardinge, and, my goodness, but that cover’s wonderful.

Though I haven’t read Fingerprints of You and can’t tell you anything about its quality, I can tell you that the author is gorgeous and has great taste in shoes/clothing. I saw her speak at DBF. She seems really super nice.

I suspect you will not like Defiance, but you surprise me sometimes, so who knows.

I ALSO opened my wallet for Sweet Venom at the price of free. Pretty clever to offer the second book for free, since people will then want to buy book one, though I will still go library.

Never heard of Carpe Diem, but I love that phrase. Investigation says it sounds like a me book, even though her name (Vassar Spore) annoys me.

  9. Good to know you liked The Unidentified. The reviews aren’t great but I respect your opinion, so…

    It is a GORGEOUS cover.

Good to know about the author. I always like it when they are good looking. 😉

I suspect I will not like it either. I’m happy I surprise you sometimes. No one ever wants to be too predictable.

I didn’t even KNOW the second book was free so I missed it! *&@*&#

Her name IS annoying. But I love travel fiction, so…
