My Soul to Save (Soul Screamers, #2)My Soul to Save by Rachel Vincent
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Goodreads Summary:

When Kaylee Cavanaugh screams, someone dies.

So when teen pop star Eden croaks onstage and Kaylee doesn’t wail, she knows something is dead wrong. She can’t cry for someone who has no soul.

The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad’s ironclad curfew and putting her too-hot-to-be-real boyfriend’s loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls: a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld—a consequence they can’t possibly understand.

Kaylee can’t let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk….

Review:

This series didn’t really get off to a great start with me. It’s not that I thought it was crappy, I just didn’t think it was anything special. If you go back and look at my review for book one(but please don’t, it stinks), you’ll see I didn’t think much of it. It’s still not my favorite series in the world or anything, but it’s gotten better. The first book had a lot of back story and I think now that we have gotten that out of the way, the series is free to get better. It’s very plot driven, and I really enjoyed the plot of My Soul to Save.

Addison is a famous popstar, but she never would have been famous in the first place if she had not sold her soul to a hellion in exchange for fame and fortune. Kaylee, Nash, and Tod happen to be at her concert because Tod is her ex, when all heck breaks loose. Eden, the main act, dies, and Libby, a dark reaper shows up and sucks up demon’s breath as it exits Eden’s body. This is not the same thing as a soul and Kaylee also notices that she does not have to sing for Eden’s soul. Why? Because she sold it to Dekker Media(which based on descriptions, sounds eerily like Disney) for fame and fortune. It was time for Eden to die, but Addison has done the same thing and her time is not up yet. Libby, the dark reaper says she has 4 more days. So they all make a plan to try and get Addison’s soul back from the Netherworld. I’ll stop there and let you continue on if you want to read it. It’s a pretty straightforward plot and not as confusing as it sounds.

There were some pretty cool scenes in this book, most of which took place in the Netherworld. It’s a really cool concept and quite hard to explain, but it’s somewhat like a mirror image of our world, but instead of humans, there are demons, fiends, and plants that can eat you alive. There’s a scene where they all have to go into Texas Stadium and then enter the Netherworld version and it was pretty crazy. I loved it and I enjoyed the imagery.

There are a couple of things I am still looking for in this series. I still don’t think the characters are particularly well-developed. It’s very plot-driven and exciting, which is great, but I am missing the balance that makes me care about the characters too. I still think it could go much deeper, and I hope it does. I want to feel some emotions for these characters. I want to care. I haven’t yet. I’m enjoying what I am reading, sure, and going along for the ride and enjoying it, but I want more.

The one thing I am really enjoying is the world-building. I think Rachel Vincent is right on with that. I appreciate the originality and deep-thinking that went into creating all the details. It’s very, very cool. Now I just need the characters to catch up and it would easily be a 5 star read. Here’s hoping the next book achieves that for me.
